9 Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning
Air ducts need cleaning when they are recirculating dust, allergens, or odors into your home. The clearest signs are dust streaks around vents, dust that returns within a day or two of cleaning, a musty smell when the system starts, allergies that flare indoors, and a home that is new construction or recently renovated.
1. Dust streaks around your supply vents
Dark or gray streaks on the ceiling or wall around a register mean dust is blowing out of the duct with the air. If the register itself is fuzzy on the back side, the duct behind it is worse.
2. You dust, and it is back in a day or two
Every house gets dusty. But if a freshly wiped table has a visible layer again within 48 hours, the system is recirculating dust that has already collected inside the ductwork.
3. A musty or stale smell when the system kicks on
A puff of odor the moment the blower starts is the classic sign of buildup in the return side. In Oklahoma humidity, dust in the ducts can hold moisture and smell faintly like a damp basement.
4. Allergies or asthma that are worse indoors
If symptoms improve when you leave the house and come back when you return, the air inside is the issue. Ducts that have collected pollen, pet dander, and dust mites push all of it back into the living space every cycle.
5. Your home is new construction or recently renovated
Builders rarely clean the ducts before closing. Drywall dust, sawdust, and insulation fibers sit in the lines from day one. The same is true after any remodel that involved sanding or demolition. This is the most common job we do in Blanchard, Newcastle, and Tuttle.
6. You just moved in and the ducts have never been cleaned
You inherit the previous owner's pets, smoke, cooking, and years of dust. A cleaning at move-in gives you a true fresh start and is far easier before furniture is in place.
7. Uneven airflow or rooms that never get comfortable
A room that stays hot in summer while the rest of the house is fine often has a partially blocked duct run. Cleaning restores the airflow the system was designed to deliver, and we flag any damage we find during the inspection.
8. Visible debris, insects, or signs of rodents in a vent
If you can see it at the register, the rest of the run has it too. Rodent droppings and insect nests in ductwork are a health issue, not just a dust issue, and the whole system should be cleaned.
9. It has been more than three to five years
That is the interval most homeowners should plan on. Homes with pets, allergy sufferers, acreage with gravel drives, or an Oklahoma red-dirt yard tend to need it on the shorter end of that range.
